The state police fire marshal’s office is investigating two fires that occurred within about a 24-hour period in close proximity to one another.

Uniontown firefighters quickly contained a small fire that damaged a garage around 5 p.m. Wednesday on Lenox Street in Uniontown.

Uniontown Fire Department Chief Chuck Coldren said the cause of the fire appears to be suspicious, so it is under investigation by the state police fire marshal. He said no one was hurt.

A short hop away from the garage, firefighters battled a blaze for nearly four hours that started around 12:33 p.m. Tuesday. The fire caused heavy damage to a vacant home on North Gallatin Avenue.

Firefighters from Uniontown, South Union, Hopwood and North Union worked together to contain the fire so that it did not spread to nearby structures such as ABC Schoolhouse, a child daycare center that sits next door. The children at the daycare center had to be evacuated to the front porch of Dolfi’s Funeral Home nearby.

That fire, too, is under investigation from the state police fire marshal’s office. No injuries were reported.
