Stephen F. ‘Arky’ Ondash, Jr.
Stephen F. ‘Arky” Ondash, Jr., 88, of Vestaburg, Pa., died Sunday September 15, 2013 in Lasosky’s Personal Care Home, Clarksville, Pa.
He was born August 11, 1925 in Gates, Pa., a son of the late Stephen and Susan B. Chech Ondash.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII having served in Northern France and the Rhineland. For his services he was awarded the American Theatre Defense Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theatre Service Medal with two bronze stars, WWII Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
For 18 years Mr. Ondash was employed by the J&L Steel Vesta 5 Mine as a mason. He later worked for, and retired from, LTV Steel’s South Side Works.
Mr. Ondash was a 65-year member of the Hanson-Cole American Legion Post 391 of Fredericktown where he was named Legionnaire for the Years 2000-2008. He was very active with the Post Honor Guard and was also a lifetime member of Carmichaels VFW Post 3491.
He was also a lifelong member of the St. Oliver Plunkett Parish, Fredericktown, Pa. and was a former member of the United Mine Workers of America and the United Steel Workers of America.
Mr. Ondash was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan as well as enjoying hunting and fishing. He was a member of the V5 Camp, Endeavor, Pa.
Surviving are two brothers, John W. Ondash of Rochester, Pa. and Edward F. Ondash (Diana) of Streetsboro, Ohio; one sister, Marjorie Campbell (Alfred) of Vestaburg, Pa.; several nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, Joseph and Paul S. Ondash.
Friends will be received Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the GREENLEE FUNERAL HOME, 42 Bank Street at Crawford Road, Fredericktown, Pa. where a Blessing Service will be held Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at 10 a.m. followed at 10:30 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial in the St. Oliver Plunkett Parish, Fredericktown, Pa. with Rev. Francis Frazier as Celebrant. Interment will follow in the Fredericktown Cemetery, Fredericktown, Pa. Military rites will be accorded graveside by the Hanson-Cole American Legion Post 391, Fredericktown.
