Tax collector: Tax/rent rebate filing help is free
The Dunbar Township tax office has been receiving numerous calls from taxpayers with questions about an agency named the Senior Advisory Center that is mailing letters to the elderly and disabled regarding their Pennsylvania property tax/rent rebates, township tax collector Marigrace Butela said.
The correspondence states that the agency will process a rebate for a fee of $39.
The company uses a Harrisburg mail drop.
The Better Business Bureau put out a press release in December 2011 stating that it believes the letter is misleading as people can apply for the program for free, Butela said.
The Dunbar Township tax office offers assistance in filing the rebate at no charge, Butela said. The deadline has been extended to Dec. 31.
Eligible property owners who live in their homes can earn up to $35,000 (only half is counted for Social Security) and renters can earn up to $15,000. Forms and assistance can be obtained for free at the tax office, the Department of Revenue district offices, local Area Agency on Aging, senior centers and state legislators’ offices.
Butela said residents who have questions should call her at 724-626-0804.
