John Adam Durany

Colonel John Adam Durany, US Army retired, age 84, of North Middleton Township, Carlisle, passed away recently.

Born in Brownfield, Pa., he was the son of the late John and Mary Durany.

Following his graduation with the Uniontown High School Class of 1946, John enlisted in the US Army to serve his country. John survived Officers’ Candidate School as well as other invigorating experiences and ultimately advanced to the rank of colonel. His military career of nearly 30 years spanned the early Cold War period and the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts.

John’s military citations and commendations included: Legion of Merit with First Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters, United Nations Service Medal, and Service and Campaign Medals awarded during the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts.

As time permitted, John attended the California State Teachers College in California, Pennsylvania (as it was then called) and the University of Maryland, where he eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

After retirement from the Army, John acquired a real estate broker’s license and worked actively for another fifteen years as a partner in a successful real estate brokerage firm associated with Century 21 in Springfield, Va.

In 1950, John married Ruby Fern Sproul, originally of Ohiopyle, Pa., while both were attending college at California. She survives him. Devoted strongly to his family, John is also survived by: a brother, Theodore Durany, living in Smock, Pa.; a sister, Vera Sirianni and husband, Otto, of East Liverpool, Ohio; a son, Gerald A. Durany with wife Shahla, residing in Crowley, Texas; a son, Alvin E. Durany with wife, Deborah, living in Atlanta, Ga.; a son, John R. Durany and wife, Donna, of Woodbridge, Va.; a daughter, Barbara M. Hangey, residing in La Plata, Md; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

John was a member of several organizations, including:Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Military Officers Association (MOAA), AMVETS Post 103 in Hopwood, Pa., North Middleton Senior Citizens and Sertoma Club Cancer Support Group of Carlisle.

He avidly followed political and economic developments, both national and international. And he particularly enjoyed tinkering around his garden, yard and home.

John’s memorial service and funeral were arranged by HOFFMAN-ROTH OF CARLISLE. He was interred in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, Pa., with a military honor guard provided by the U.S. Army. Rev. Dr. Paul L. Herring of Carlisle officiated the memorial service and funeral.
