Perry supervisors hope to improve park, ball field

PERRY TWP. — Pending approval of a grant application, residents may soon see improvements to the Star Junction ball field and Weiss Memorial Park.

Township supervisors said at their meeting Tuesday that they are applying for a playground grant from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources for the purpose of implementing all or part of the following: install a barrier fence at the park, replace bleachers at the ball field and the park, install solid surfaces under the bleachers and provide handicapped access to the bleachers at both locations.

Supervisors said they are hoping to receive $40,000 of the $60,000 grant.

“At $40,000, there will be a 50-50 match,” said Supervisor A. J. Boni. “A lot of it we can do in-house with in-kind services. That will be our match: in-kind contributions.”

Each new bleacher will cost $6,000, he added, with a total cost of $24,000 to replace all four.

“They basically build our parks,” said Secretary and Treasurer Supervisor Janet Galla of the state agency awarding the grants.

Supervisors said they expect to hear back from the agency regarding the grant in the next few months.

Supervisors also announced that the township will be spending up to $90,000 on road repairs set to begin soon.

Wickhaven and Hollow roads are slated to be paved, while Old Route 51, Fayette City Boulevard and Blue Top Road will receive seal coatings. Money permitting, the township will also seal coat Holly and Maplewood roads, Boni said, adding that the township should have about $20,000 left from its liquid fuel allocations after completing the road repairs. That is the same amount the township incurred in additional winter road maintenance costs so far this year.

Also at the meeting, supervisors reminded that following consolidation action by county commissioners, the Layton polling station will not be open for the May 20 primary elections.

“People in Layton and Banning will have to come to Star Junction to cast their votes,” Boni said.

The Star Junction polling station is located at the Star Junction municipal building, 126 Diamond St.

The Whitsett polling station, located at 166 Main St., will also be open.

In other business, supervisors set Monday, April 28, as spring cleanup day and said elected auditors had approved the township’s 2013 financial audit.

“(Galla) has all the book in order, as usual, and the books are financially sound,” Boni said.
