Police investigate great train robbery

By Miles Layton jmlayton@heraldstandard.Com 1 min read

Train bandits have had movies made about them, but few people would ever consider stealing a model train.

Yet, Uniontown police are investigating a model train shoplifting Monday from the Get a Hobby store on West Main Street.

A thief stole two model engines valued at $150 each. Earlier, the bandit may have nabbed a $200 engine, police said.

No arrests have been made, but the suspect was filmed with video surveillance footage.

According to police reports, a man walked into the store around 4 p.m. to look at the store’s formidable inventory of trains big and small. The man picked up three engines — for the train enthusiasts — HO scale. Police reports said the man put the engines inside his jacket.

Police said when a store clerk confronted the man, he returned one of the trains to the shelf before he ran out of the store with the two trains he had inside his jacket. Earlier, the thief may have stolen an additional $200 train, police said. Total heist was about $500, authorities said.

Anyone with information should contact police at 724-430-2929.
