State Department of Transportation (PennDOT) workers cleaned up a rock slide that forced the closure of one lane of Route 906 in Washington Township on Friday morning.

The rock slide was reported at approximately 10 a.m., and workers had it cleaned up and re-opened the closed lane just after 11:30 a.m., said Chris Sleigher, Fayette County manager for PennDOT District 12.

“It was basically just maybe 15 tons of material that came down on Route 906,” Sleighter said.

Part of the hillside from where the rocks fell is in a state right of way and was the site of a rock slide two or three years ago, he said.

“All this wet weather brings some of that lose rock down on the roadway. It’s inevitable,” Sleighter said. “Several years ago we scaled it back and removed most of the loose rock, but it continues to loosen up on occasion when you get heavy rain.”
