Dunkin’ Donuts opening shop in South Union Township
A regional Dunkin Donuts franchise is expanding into Fayette County.
Construction recently started on a Dunkin Donuts along Route 21 in the parking lot in front of Gabriel’s in South Union Township.
When it opens in July, it will be the 32nd Dunkin Donuts that Heartland Restaurant Group of Pittsburgh owns in the Pittsburgh region. The company already opened two this year and is planning three more, including the local shop.
“Uniontown will be our 32nd,” said Jordan Kay, a spokesman for Heartland.
Heartland plans to continue expanding south of Pittsburgh and was attracted to Fayette County by the availability and low cost of real estate and a growing market.
“Real estate is cheaper. It’s easier to find space, and the costs are a little more in our favor,” Kay said. “It’s a good market. It seems like Uniontown is developing more and more.
“We pretty much are definitely continuing to build. We’ll probably have about 50-55 stores in this region. We’re definitely looking to grow south of the city. Whenever we’re done developing, we’ll have at least 50.”
The company will start hiring the 40 employees it needs in June so they can be trained before the grand opening, he said.

The restaurant will feature the brand’s famous doughnuts and coffee as well as its other drinks and sandwiches. It will have drive-through service and provide free wi-fi. Initially, it will remain open until midnight, but it might eventually open 24 hours a day, Kay said.
Dunkin Donuts, which has about 11,000 restaurants in 33 countries, reported $7.4 billion in sales from its franchises in 2013. Founded in 1950, Dunkin Donuts is based in Canton, Mass., and is part of the Dunkin Brands Group, which also owns Baskin Robbins.
