Donald Clayton “Don” Fretts

Donald Clayton Fretts of Swoope, Virginia and formerly of Scottdale, Pennsylvania, died on Tuesday, August 5, 2014.

Donald Clayton was born on Wednesday, December 29, 1943 the son of George C. Fretts and Eleanor (Younkin) Fretts in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania.

Don graduated from East Huntingdon High School, the University of Maryland and Penn State University.

Don was an active member and leader of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Virginia and formerly of Christ United Methodist Church in Scottdale, Pennsylvania.

Don spent his life working in agriculture and was the owner of F&F Farms and was an agriculture educator, whether through working with 4-H, working with farmers, or teaching.

He loved hunting.

Don was a forward- thinking, hardworking, young-at-heart, generous Christian.

He retired from Penn State Extension in 2008, having worked as an Agronomist and Director of the Fayette County Cooperative Extension.

Don formerly served as the Executive Director of the Westmoreland County Fair, Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

He was a member of the Penn West Farm Credit Board.

Don was recently honored by being named to National Association of County Agriculture Agents Hall of Fame.

Following his move to Virginia, Don worked with Augusta Co-Op.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Judy (Johnson) Fretts.

Also surviving are his son, Jeremy Fretts of Alexandria, Virginia; daughter, Julie and her husband Brian Curry of Warrenton, Virginia; and four grandsons: Andrew Curry, Patrick Curry, Evan Curry and Conner Curry; his sister, Saundra Crosby and her husband Dick; his brother, Robert Fretts and wife Susan; as well as nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 8, 2014 at ST. PAUL’S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 2000 Shutterlee Mill Road, Staunton, VA 24401 followed by a reception and visitation.

Don will be missed by family and friends, but they rejoice in knowing he is with Christ his Savior.
