PennDOT announces status of projects

4 min read

The state Department of Transportation has issued an announcement updating the public on various road and bridge projects in Fayette County.

The projects are as follows:

n Masontown Bridge — The contractor on this $49.6 million bridge replacement project is Brayman Construction Corp. The project includes road approach work on both the Fayette County and Greene County sides. The bridge carries Route 21 between Masontown and Monongahela Township, Greene County. The old bridge was imploded on Sept. 28, 2013. Work will tentatively be complete in April.

Update: The Masontown Bridge project will be working on erecting structural steel, placing the new bridge deck, excavation on the Greene County side, drainage and road work throughout the project. Traffic is on the bridge with no restrictions. During the week of Aug. 25, work will begin to pour concrete on the deck of the new structure, PennDOT said. That will result in a single-lane closure for the entire length of the bridge and for a portion of time afterwards. PennDOT asks that motorists pay attention to the message boards as they will be changed as the pours are scheduled to allow adequate notification to the public warning them of the anticipated delays.

n Route 381 at the Mill Run reservoir — This project is the replacement of a metal truss bridge on Route 381 at the Mill Run reservoir. The project is contracted to Plum Contracting Inc. for $4,873,381. The new structure will be built adjacent to the existing structure on a new alignment to the east side, not to interfere with the current flow of traffic during construction. The project is tentatively expected to be compete later this month.

Update: The contractor has temporary traffic signals installed for phases 2A and 2B.

The contractor is continuing work on concrete pipe crossings, placing rock for toe benches, and forming rebar, placing concrete for the bridge approach slabs. There will be minor traffic restrictions throughout the project site, said PennDOT.

n Grindstone Bridge replacement — Route 4005 over Redstone Creek — This project consists of replacement of the Grindstone Bridge, which carries Route 4005 over Redstone Creek in Jefferson and Redstone townships. The construction work includes replacement of the bridge and minimal reconstruction of the approach roads. Construction is anticipated to be complete by September. Traffic will be detoured throughout construction.

Update: Construction for the new bridge has started and a detour is currently in place. Motorists should follow the posted detour that uses Grindstone Road (Route 4028), Laureldale Road (Route 4011), Perry Road (Route 4034) and Central School Road (Route 4036). Construction is expected to last into the fall when the new bridge will be open to traffic.

n Coal Lick Run Bridge — This project is for the replacement of a bridge on a section of Route 51 (Pittsburgh Street) that goes over Coal Lick Run in Uniontown.

The contractor on the $1.4 million project is Plum Contracting Inc. Construction for this project will not begin until the 2015 construction season.

n Route 21 from Thompson Crossing to Uniontown Mall — This project calls for the widening of Route 21 from Thompson Crossing to the mall. The contractor on the $18 million project is Golden Triangle Construction Co. Inc. of Imperial.

n District-wide bridges — This project involves beam end repairs, beam end painting and other miscellaneous repairs to 16 bridges throughout the four-county District 12. The Fayette County bridges are: Laurel Run Bridge on state Route 1003 near Normalville; Champion Creek Bridge on state Route 1050 near Champion; Big Meadow Run Bridge on state Route 2008 near Chalk Hill; Cats Creek Bridge on state Route 3011 near Masontown; Washington Run tributary bridge on state Route 4038 in Perryopolis; and Washington Run Bridge on state Route 4038 near Layton.
