Memorial Services for David William Coates Sr. 79 year-old Weatherford, Oklahoma resident, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 12, 2014 in “THE CHAPEL” OF THE LOCKSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 210 North Custer Street, Weatherford, OK 73096 (580.772.5535) with Doyle Warren officiating.

David was born on Wednesday, May 22, 1935 in Uniontown, Pennsylvania to Lloyd Coates and Eleanor (Nesmith) Coates and passed away Saturday, December 6, 2014 at his home in Weatherford, Oklahoma.

David was raised and attended school in Uniontown, Pennsylvania where he graduated.

Upon graduation, he attended University of Pittsburgh and earned a Bachelor of Pharmacy in 1957.

On Friday, August 16, 1957, he married Judith Horton and made their home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

David went on to receive his Master’s Degree and then his Ph.D. at the University of Rhode Island.

In 1966, David and his family moved to Weatherford, Oklahoma.

He taught at Southwestern Oklahoma State University School of Pharmacy for 31 years before retiring in 1997. He was a passionate and devoted teacher who took great pride in educating a significant number of practicing pharmacists in Oklahoma and beyond.

David grew up an avid hunter and fisherman, spending much of his time with his father, his best friend.

He enjoyed golfing and was a Certified Scuba Diver and Instructor.

David was a lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He played tenor saxophone and in his younger years played in dance and jazz bands.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Charles Coates; and one sister, Jean.

David is survived by his wife, Judy (Horton) Coates of their home in Weatherford, Oklahoma; one daughter, Amy Sutherlin and husband Dirk of Jackson Missouri and two grandsons Kyle Sutherlin of Menlo Park, California and Logan Sutherlin of Columbia, Missouri; and one son, David Coates and wife Kimberly of Stillwater, Oklahoma and grandson Benjamin Coates.

He was loved and will be missed by his western Pennsylvania family.
