State police said a Nemacolin man died in a single-vehicle accident Thursday morning in Greene County.

David M. Whipkey, 42, was traveling on Route 21 around 4:20 a.m. when he was killed about three miles from Waynesburg, authorities said.

Police said when Whipkey tried to navigate a curve at a high rate of speed, his car ran onto the shoulder of the road for about 195 feet before re-entering the highway.

According to the report, the vehicle then traveled 230 feet, crossing both lanes and off of the berm again, and crashed into an embankment. The vehicle slid 86 feet along the embankment before spinning back onto the roadway and coming to a stop, police said.

Whipkey was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown into the rear of the vehicle where he struck his head, police said.

He was pronounced dead at 5:14 a.m. at the scene by Greene County Deputy Coroner Bill Lewis.

The coroner’s office said no one else was in the vehicle and the incident is under investigation.
