Potluck scheduled

The Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA) will host its western region potluck from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Chatham University Eden Hall Campus in Richland Township, Allegheny County.

The potluck is open to current and prospective members and will be followed by a presentation by Ken Meter of Crossroads Resource Center. Meter will share his research findings related to “The Economic Opportunity of Local Foods in Pennsylvania.”

Nominations sought

The Greater Connellsville Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations in five categories for awards that will be presented at its annual banquet Feb. 24. The chamber asks the public to submit nominations in the following categories: Athena Award, Community Service Award-Individual, Community Service Award-Group, Distinguished Citizen Award and Beautification Award.

Nominees need not be members of the chamber. Nomination forms are available at the chamber office on South Arch Street. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 24. Surgeons hired

The surgical practice of Heiskell King Burns & Tallman of Mon General Hospital in Morgantown recently hired Uniontown native Dr. Shawna M. Grimm. Grimm, a general surgeon and endoscopist, received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, completed her residency at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, did a breast cancer research fellowship at Soll Lab Research through the University of Iowa and worked as an emergency medical technician for six years.

The practice also hired Dr. Ferdinand C. Martinez, a former surgeon at Southwest Regional Medical Center in Waynesburg, where he served as the medical director of the Wound and Hyperbaric Center and chairman of surgical services. Martinez will work out of the practice’s new office on Mt. Morris Road in Waynesburg, which is expected to open in January.

Farm show set

The state Department of Agriculture will hold the 99th Pennsylvania Farm Show at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m Jan. 10-16 and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 17.

The eight-day show will feature 6,000 animals, 10,000 competitive exhibits, 300 commercial exhibitors and numerous highlights and attractions. Admission is free. For more information, visit online at www.farmshow.state.pa.us.

Grant awarded

Highlands Hospital was awarded a $30,000 grant by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield that will allow the hospital to purchase a van for the Highlands Hospital Regional Center for Autism, effectively adding a transportation component to the center. Highlands Hospital was chosen for the grant from among three other regional health care centers that made presentations at the Allegheny Health Network Innovations Forum in October at Nemacolin Woodlands.

Office opened

Modjeski and Masters, a Mechanicsburg-based bridge engineering and design firm, announced it has opened a regional office in Lemont Furnace to serve the Greater Pittsburgh area and western Pennsylvania.

The firm said the expansion will allow it to better serve the state Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and other clients to improve the region’s infrastructure. The office, one of ten Modjeski and Masters locations nationwide, offers fixed and movable bridge design, inspection and rehabilitation and all facets of life cycle maintenance, research and code development.

Homeless vets aided

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced $555,887 in rental vouchers to local public housing agencies in Pennsylvania to help 103 homeless veterans find permanent supportive housing.

Vouchers are provided through the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program, which combines rental assistance from HUD with case management and clinical services provided by VA. Veterans participating in the program rent privately owned housing and contribute 30 percent or less of their income toward rent. VA offers eligible homeless veterans clinical and supportive services through its medical centers.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) market news grain auction report for western Pennsylvania for Dec. 8 is as follows:

Dealer and broker bids: Corn, number 2, $3.46-$3.58, average $3.49; wheat, number 2, $5.54; soybeans, $9.55-$9.89, average $9.81.

Feed and grain mill bids: Corn, number 2, $3.50-$3.80, average $3.69; oats, number 2, $3.50-$4.75, average $4.04.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) market news hay auction report for central Pennsylvania for Dec. 8 is as follows:

Alfalfa, premium, 255-300; mixed hay, premium, 245-370; timothy, premium, 250; grass, good, 200-320; straw, 125-175.
