Edwin Stanton “Honey” “Ed” Harger
Edwin Stanton Harger ‘Honey’, age 87, Newell, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully Tuesday December 16, 2014 in the Mon Valley Hospital after a brief illness.
Edwin was born in Newell, where he lived his entire life. He was the son of the now late Martin L. Harger Sr. and Ruth (Robinson) Harger.
He was a very devoted loving husband and was predeceased by his beloved wife and ‘sweetheart’, Delores ‘Do-Do’ (Givogre) Harger, as well as the following brothers and sisters: Harry Harger, Robert Harger, Delores Harger, William Harger, Andrew Harger and his wife Ruth, Martin L. Harger and his wife Lorraine (Fuller), John Harger and his wife Margaret, Eileen Harger Kelly and her husband Glenn, Alice Harger Pearson and her husband David, and Eleanor Harger McPhail. He was also predeceased by the following brothers-in-law: William Joseph Givogre, John Kwasney, John Wensing.
During World War II, Edwin proudly served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946.
He worked for the P&LE Railroad and also the Allied Chemical Company in Newell, retiring from both in 1985.
‘Ed’ loved his community of Newell!
As a young man, he played on Newell’s football team and worked at the YMCA.
He was a member of the Newell Fireman’s Club and the Santa Barbara Italian Club.
Edwin was part of a group of men who were instrumental in re-instituting the Newell Volunteer Fire Department in 1954. He remained a member for the past 60 years and served as Chief of the Department for 18 Years and will be given a Fireman’s Funeral.
He was a member of the Newell Federal Credit Union for 46 years, serving on the Board of Directors for many years.
Edwin was a devoted member of the Newell community for 87 years and will be sorely missed
Edwin is survived by his beloved son, Martin L. Harger Sr.; his two cherished grandchildren: Amber Lynn Harger and Martin L. Harger Jr.; and his precious great grandchildren: Sage Lynn Harger and Chloe Morgan Harger. He is also survived by his only living sibling, Ruth (Harger) Kwasney-Wensing. In addition he is survived by his sister-in-law, Mary (Givogre) Tafel and her husband Rev. Gregory S. Tafel; and many beloved nieces and nephews on the Harger and Givogre sides of the family.
Friends will be received on Sunday, December 21, 2014 in the ELEY-MCCRORY FUNERAL HOME INC., 334 Main Street, Fayette City, Pa. (724.326.5621) from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m
Funeral Services will take place in the funeral home Monday December 22, 2014 at 11:00 a.m.
Interment will follow in LaFayette Memorial Park, Brier Hill, Pa.
Members of the Newell Volunteer Fire Department will conduct Services in the Funeral Home on Sunday evening at 7 p.m.
