Patrick D. Maher Sr., age 70, of Uniontown, Pa. passed away Wednesday, December 17, 2014 in the UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa.

He was born Tuesday, November 28, 1944 in Uniontown, Pennsylvania the son of the late Dennis Maher and Margaret (Donnelly) Maher.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Dennis Maher; and his sister, Sister Denise Maher, CSJ.

Patrick was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church.

He was a graduate of the former Saint John High School, class of 1963.

He was a Veteran of the United States Air Force who served 1963-1967.

He received his Associate Degree in Mining Engineering from Penn State University and had 30 years service with the United States Steel Corporation, first at the Robena Mine, then the Dilworth Mine where he was the First Production Boss. He then became Superintendent in 1981. He then was the Senior Mine Inspector at Cumberland Mine until his retirement in 2000.

He was a member of the Cumberland Mine Rescue Team from 1984 until his retirement and was the Training Leader of this group. He received the Holmes Safety Association Award in 2002.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 51, lifetime member of the Elks BPOE No. 370 and a lifetime member of the Messmore Rod and Gun Club.

He was also a member of the Pennsylvania Safety Association.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, JoAnn (Vellucci) Maher; his loving children: Patrick Maher Jr. and his wife Kristie, Thomas Maher and his wife Stephanie, and Marjory Yeager and her husband Brian; seven grand children whom he adored Josephine, Andrew, Victoria, Patrick, and Thomas Maher, Natalie and Aaron Yeager; a brother, James Maher and wife Patty; sisters: Mary Dills, Ellen ‘Nellie’ Eddie, Jane Weaver, Rita Riordan, Ann Sweeney; a sister-in-law, Bridget Maher; other nieces and nephews; other relatives; and many friends.

Friends will be received in KEZMARSKY FUNERAL HOME, 71 Pennsylvania Avenue, Uniontown, Pa., Saturday, December 20, from 6 to 8 p.m., on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and on Monday morning, December 22, 2014 until 9:30 a.m. when Parting Prayers will be said.

A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. in Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 50 Jefferson Street, with Rev. Father James D. Tringhese as Celebrant.

Interment follows in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery, Connellsville, Pa., where Military Honors will be accorded at graveside.
