Pavilion at Cat’s Court’s to honor Kylie Sage

Kylie Marie Sage of Bullskin Township spent her last day on earth last August at an opening tournament for a new volleyball court built in memory of another young woman who was killed in an automobile accident.

But hours after the 23-year-old left Cat’s Courts at Mountz Creek Park in Connellsville, Sage lost her own life when, police allege, her cousin shot her when he was handling a gun she had just purchased.

Now both women will be remembered at the park with the addition of a pavilion in memory of Sage.

Melissa Tzan, Connellsville Parks and Recreation Board president, said the pavilion is being built by Sage’s family.

According to Mayor Greg Lincoln, materials and lighting for the project are being provided by an anonymous donor.

“We’re very grateful to them,” said Lincoln.

The courts are named after Catherine “Cat” Healy of Bear Rocks who died from injuries she sustained last June in an automobile accident.

Healy was a 2011 Connellsville graduate and a sophomore at the time of her death at Penn State Behrend, where she was a member of the volleyball team.

A 2008 graduate of Connellsville Area High School, Sage was actively involved in 4-H and participated regularly in horse shows.

Lincoln said work on the pavilion will begin after the city excavates and installs $35,000 in playground equipment at the park paid for with a Community Development Block Grant.

“We’re excited for it, and it’s going to add to the beauty of the park,” said Lincoln.

Lincoln said the park is easily accessible because it is located off Route 119 making it convenient for visitors.

“Everything’s just coming into place,” said Vern Ohler, public works foreman for Connellsville. “I’ve had the parks for five years and this park has been a blank canvas.”

According to Lincoln, Sage and Healy had a bond on earth and one that continues.

“It was like they were intertwined.” said Lincoln. “She was definitely connected to those courts through Cat, so it would just be fitting to name that pavilion after her.”
