Emmett Delano Matthews
Emmett Delano Matthews, age 77, of Mount Braddock, Pa., went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, July 4, 2014 while a patient in the West Penn Hospital, Hospice Care Unit.
He was born Monday, August 24, 1936 at Mount Independence, North Union Township, Pa., the son of the late Walter Matthews Sr. and Mary Ellen (Welsh) Matthews McNutt.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years whom he married on May 18, 1961, Mary Jane (Zebley) Matthews, who died August 27, 2013; three brothers, Harford “Dale” Matthews, William Harry Matthews in infancy, and Charles “Ted” Matthews; a brother-in-law, Mike Nadzam Sr.; two sisters-in-law, Gail Matthews and Twila June Zebley; a nephew, Theodore W. Matthews; and step-father, Fred McNutt.
He served in the United States Army for more than two years and was stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
He was retired from Anchor Hocking with 34 years of service.
Emmett was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He was a Protestant by faith and affiliated with the Franklin Memorial United Methodist Church and had previously attended the Dunbar Baptist Church.
He enjoyed gardening, playing cards and riding his lawn tractor and he took great pride in raising steers.
Emmett was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Houston Texans.
He is survived by his two daughters and three sons, each of whom made him very proud: Darcia Lynn (Martin) Klippi of Connellsville, Pa., Susan Jane Matthews at home, Gregory Delano (Maria) Matthews of Plum Borough, Pa., Emmett Garrett Matthews of Tucson, Arizona and David Lee (Elizabeth) Matthews of Export, Pa.; four grandchildren: Jared Gregory, Zachary William, Adam Joseph and Elissa Kay Matthews all of Plum Borough, Pa.; two step-granddaughters: Megan Clark and Jillian Clark of Export, Pa.; a nephew whom he thought of as a son, James V. Matthews of Washington, D.C.; brothers: Walter (Shirley) Matthews Jr. and Russell Matthews both of Mount Independence; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Wanda Matthews, Alice (Ernest) Yauger and Enoch Zebley Jr. all of Mount Independence, Pa., Hester Nadzam of Mount Braddock, Pa., Shirley (Devon) Yauger of Youngstown, Pa.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family would like to thank the many employees of the Cherry Tree Nursing Center who provided care and support during our father’s time there.
Friends will be received on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. in the BURHANS-CROUSE FUNERAL HOME, 28 Connellsville Street, Dunbar, Pa.
Visitation will continue Tuesday, July 8, at 10 a.m. in the FRANKLIN MEMORIAL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 54 Bridge Street, Dunbar, Pa., until 11 a.m. when Services will be held with Reverend David D. Ealy officiating.
Interment will follow in the Zaring-Matthews Cemetery with graveside Military Rites accorded by the General George C. Marshall AMVETS Post 103, Hopwood, Pa.
