Betty Ellen (Solomon) Coldren Schmidt

Betty Ellen (Solomon) Coldren Schmidt, age 89, resident of Golden Living Center, Uniontown, Pa., formerly of Messmore, Pa., passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2014 in Uniontown.

Betty was born on Saturday, March 14, 1925 in Uniontown, Pa., the daughter of Charles Solomon and Hazel (Hostetler) Solomon.

Betty graduated from Uniontown Senior High School, Class of 1943, and from the Oberlin Business College in 1945.

She was a member of New Salem Presbyterian Church where she had served as a Deacon, also taught Sunday School and the Vacation Bible School, was a member of the Women’s Association and the church Choir, and had served as the Church Secretary.

She was a German Township Band Mother, a Cub Scout Den Mother, and the very proud grandmother of four Eagle Scouts.

Betty was a Medical Transcriptionist for the late Dr. George Tolstoy and then worked in the Medical Records Department at the Uniontown Hospital.

She was employed for sixteen years as Medical Secretary for Dr. David B. Goodman, M.D., and upon her retirement, she became a volunteer at Uniontown Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Lester Coldren; by her second husband, Julius Schmidt; h e r b r o t h e r, Rev. C. William Solomon; and in infancy two sisters Dorothy and Miriam.

She is survived by two sons and one daughter: Thomas Coldren and his wife Deb of McClellandtown, Pa., Charles Coldren and his wife Cathy of Uniontown, Pa., and Sue Voithoffer and her husband Lou of McClellandtown, Pa.; g r a n d c h i l d r e n: Christopher Coldren and his wife Shannon, Christina Wally and her husband Joshua, Craig Coldren and his fiancee Val, C a r r i e Coldren, Thomas Coldren and Ericka, and Daniel Voithoffer; great grand children: Lucas, Fiona, Josiah, Wyatt, Mason and Jack; and a sister, Dot McGeary of Ohio.

She is also survived by Julius’ children: Bob and Betty Schmidt, Jim and Dolly Schmidt, and Katherine Popovich; grandchildren: Tricia, Trinette, Lisa, Lora, Jim and Sonya; thirteen great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received in the DEARTH FUNERAL HOME, New Salem, Pa., on Tuesday, July 8, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday, July 9, 2014 from 10 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. in the New Salem Presbyterian Church with Reverend Ross Bash and Reverend Marnie Abraham Russell officiating.

Betty’s family extends a very special thank you to Amedisys Hospice, Uniontown and also Masontown, and to the Golden Living Center E Wing for the care given to Betty.
