Brownsville gets update on bridge repairs

BROWNSVILLE — A recent inspection found that three bridges in the borough need a total of $200,000 in repair work.

Councilman Tom Bush told council on Tuesday that the inspection done by SAI Consulting Engineers of Pittsburgh found that the Charles Street bridge needs $138,300 in repairs, the Century Bridge needs $31,250 in repairs and the Brownsville Avenue bridge needs $30,650 in repairs.

Councilman Jack Lawver said the borough and Brownsville Township share ownership of the Century Bridge.

Most of the materials needed for the repairs have been obtained, but another $10,000 is needed for the rest, he said.

Council President Jim Lawver said the borough is trying to get money to repair the bridges.

In unrelated business, council unanimously voted to support the National Road Heritage Corridor’s efforts to obtain grant money to assess and develop a restoration plan for Dunlap Creek.

Jack Lawver said the heritage corridor is asking all six municipalities that border the creek to support the grant application.

In a separate matter, council unanimously voted to adopt the solid waste management and recycling ordinance.

Jim Lawver said the borough used to have separate garbage and recycling ordinances that had different definitions. The new ordinance combines the old ordinances and uses the same definitions.

An ordinance is needed for police to tow vehicles that are blocking driveways or parked on sidewalks, but the borough doesn’t have one, Jack Lawver said.

He said he would get a sample of the ordinance for council to review.

In other business, council approved advertising for part-time police officers.
