The state police fire marshal was called in to aid the North Union Township fire department in determining the cause of a late Friday fire on Taft Street.

Firefighters from West Leisenring and Hopwood, along with North Union, responded to the 9 p.m. fire to find a smoke-filled home.

Taylor Bennett, who resides in the home with her mother, Drena Bennett, said that she was returning to the residence when she spotted fire trucks and emergency personnel blocking the roadway.

“I just had a feeling it was our house that was on fire, and I was right,” she said as she paced back and forth. “There was nobody home, but I think our dogs and cat might still be inside.”

Her fears were somewhat relieved when her mother returned to the home and their two dogs followed after her as she raced toward the burning structure.

Assistant fire Chief Randy Thomas could not be reached Saturday for comment.

Fayette EMS also responded to the fire.
