Masontown council resumes executive session but takes no action

By Erin Hayes for The 2 min read

MASONTOWN — Borough officials are remaining mum on the reason behind the time change of a regularly scheduled council meeting last week and the reason for scheduling a special meeting Monday to continue that executive session.

Council President Frank McLaughlin said the time of the regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, July 8, was changed from 7 p.m. to 1 p.m. to accommodate the schedule of a representative of the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

At the July 8 meeting, council held an executive session to discuss legal matters and took no action other than approving the purchase of an emergency light bar for the borough’s new police car for just more than $4,900, McLaughlin said.

That meeting was never adjourned but continued to 1 p.m. Monday, this time to accommodate the schedule of a representative from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Todd Cooley, a rural development officer with the USDA’s Butler area office, was the first to speak Monday as council resumed the executive session to discuss legal matters.

Also sitting in on the one-hour, 40-minute executive session were representatives from Sleighter Engineering of Lemont Furnace, Joe Matyus of the Masontown Municipal Authority and borough solicitor Gary Monaghan, along with McLaughlin, and council members Harry Lee, Mike Washko, Kay Redina, Kim Essig and Bessie Kopacko. Council took no action and adjourned immediately after going back into regular session.

The next council meeting will be held at its regularly scheduled time of 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, McLaughlin said.
