Seminars for seniors planned on scams, ID theft
HARRISBURG — A series of seminars geared toward seniors who are concerned about the growing threat of identity theft, particularly on the Internet, as well as scams, will be held in the area.
The series will be conducted by state Sen. Tim Solobay, in conjunction with the state Attorney General’s office and the Southwestern Pennsylvania Area Agency on Aging.
“As computers have become an increasingly central part of our lives, I’ve found that many residents don’t completely understand the potential downside,” said Solobay, D-Canonsburg. “A small investment of time in getting educated and taking simple steps could prevent big headaches down the road.”
Solobay said the events will feature agents from the office of state Attorney General Kathleen Kane who will go over the latest scams and schemes including those launched over the Internet. The experts will instruct residents on steps they can take to secure their information.
The seminars in the area, which are free and open to the public, will be held according to the following schedule: Beth-Center Senior Center, 316 Station St., Vestaburg, 10:30 a.m. Aug. 20; Center in the Woods, 130 Woodland Court, Brownsville, 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 25; Waynesburg Community Center, 1505 Morris St., Waynesburg, 12:15 p.m. Sept. 4; Jefferson Senior Satellite Center, 190 Washington St., Jefferson, 10:15 a.m. Sept. 17; and Carmichaels Activity Center, 100 Nemacolin Road, Carmichaels, Sept. 30.
