John A. Volek Jr., age 77, passed away at his home on Sunday, June 22, 2014 with his loving family by his side.

He was born Tuesday, February 9, 1937 in Ralph (Hibbs), Pa., the son of John J. Volek and Violet (Martin) Volek.

John was a member of Saint Hubert Roman Catholic Church and The Holy Name Society, and The Knights of Columbus (a 4th Degree Knight).

A veteran of the United States Air Force, he was a Coal Miner retired from Duquesne Light’s Warwick Mine after having worked in area coal mines many years.

He was also a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 6310 and the NRA.

John was a very skilled musician on a number of instruments and had played over the years in area venues with the Volek Brothers Band.

He was a guiding light of advice and a tower of faith for his beloved family. He will be deeply missed.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Nancy (Heinze) Volek; two sons: Greg Volek, Fairchance, Pa., and John Volek and wife Fran of Smithfield; three daughters Veronica Smith, Kathy Snyder and Debbie Volek all of Smithfield; eleven grand children and five great grandchildren; a brother, Lennie Volek and wife Candace of Uniontown, Pa.; and the following brothers/sisters-in-law: Charles and Ruth Heinze, Peggy and George Rizzo, John and Ann Ervin; daughter-in-law, Shirl Veugeler; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

Deceased are two sons in infancy; three brothers Alex Volek, and twins Harold and Carold Volek; sister, Delores Beck; and a son-in-law, Dave Smith.

Friends will be received in RICHARD R. HEROD FUNERAL HOME, Point Marion, Pa., today 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday, June 27, until 10:30 a.m. when a Prayer Service will be held.

A Funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m. in Saint Hubert Roman Catholic Church, Point Marion, with Rev. Father Joseph Sredzinski as Celebrant.

Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park, Point Marion, Pa.

Parish Rosary will be recited in Funeral Home on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Knights of Columbus will stand guard on Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m
