Solobay receives animal protection award
HARRISBURG — State Sen. Tim Solobay, D-Canonsburg, was honored by Pennsylvania’s animal protection community for his work in helping create a statewide response to protect animals during emergencies.
Solobay was given the Animal Advocacy Award by the Pennsylvania State Animal Response Team (PSART) for the work he has done for the team as Democratic chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee.
PSART was formed nearly 10 years ago to assist state government in dealing with domesticated animals and livestock during emergencies, as well as creating emergency plans for future emergencies.
The group consists of 1,500 volunteers in county organizations across the state, and it has been trying to raise awareness of the importance of accounting for animals in times of emergencies.
“This isn’t just a humane thing to do. It’s also a very practical thing to do,” Solobay said. “People who fail to plan for their animals during a natural disaster or other emergency put their own lives — and the lives of emergency responders — at risk. PSARTS embodies the spirit of volunteerism on behalf of those that can’t help themselves.”
Joel Hersh, executive director of the Pennsylvania State Animal Response Team, said, “Tim Solobay has been a friend of PSARTS and our county animal rescue teams for years,” he said. “He has been instrumental in assisting us in our mission.”
The award was presented recently in the state Capitol rotunda during a rally organized by Pennsylvania Chapter of the Humane Society of the U.S. in support of numerous animal protection bills pending in the General Assembly.
The rally and awards presentation were part of the Humane Society’s annual advocacy day at the Capitol.
