East End United Community Center hosts Pizza Battle Saturday
East End United Community Center in Uniontown is offering the public a delicious way to support the non-profit organization through its first-ever Pizza Battle.
“This is the first year we’re having it, and I hope it turns out good,” said Matthew Crutchman, executive director, who would like the event to be a showcase for local pizza shops as well as benefit the center.
The Pizza Battle will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the center, located at 150 Coolspring St. Tickets are $5 for adults, while children 10 and under will receive free admission when accompanied by an adult. Tickets can be purchased at participating shops or at the center on Saturday. Individuals will receive all-you-can-sample pizza and one drink as well as the opportunity to vote for their favorite pizza, donated by participating shops.
The winner will be named at the close of the event and receives a plaque as well as the right to keep a trophy made from a pizza paddle that will be passed off year to year.
All proceeds from the Pizza Battle benefit the center, which has helped the local area for nearly 40 years. The center maintains a website, which notes its mission is “the improvement of residents’ academic, social, economic and cultural, experiences primarily through helping children and their families cope with their environments to become better and more productive citizens.”
Crutchman said the Pizza Battle proceeds will be used for the Little Legends daycare and the summer enrichment program that includes a focus on STEM — science, technology, engineering and math — education as well as field trips to the Carnegie Science Center and Pittsburgh Zoo and participation in the Summer Food Service Program. Youths will also travel to different sections of the community to perform activities with children who can’t make it to the center as a way for EEUCC to give back.
