Distribution Dates for Farmer’s Market Checks Announced
Distribution dates for farmers’ market checks for senior citizens and Women, Infant and Children (WIC) families have been set.
“It (the voucher) helps to supplement their (senior’s) nutrition. It also helps them as an economic benefit,” said Gwendolyn Ridgley, Fayette County supervisor for Southwestern PA Area Agency on Aging. “I have had so many of them tell me, when they come to pick up the vouchers, every little bit helps. That is what they tell us all the time.”
These vouchers are distributed to seniors who are at least 60 years old by Dec. 31 of this year and meet income eligibility requirements of being at 185 percent of the federal poverty income guidelines. This means that a senior in a one person household cannot make more than $21,590, a two-person household $29,101 and a three person household $36,612.

In addition to the vouchers for senior citizens, families who are enrolled or are eligible for WIC can also receive farmers’ market vouchers.
“I think our goal is to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables by our WIC participants,” said Susan Mahokey, WIC director. “We are promoting good nutrition, and part of that are fruits and vegetables.”
A mass distribution for the vouchers by Fayette County Community Action Agency Inc. (FCCAA) and Community Action Southwest is planned for June 10. Any client who is unable to attend on June 10 can receive their vouchers at their regular WIC appointments in June, July, August or September.
