Herman J. Alvarez, age 75, of Monessen, Pennsylvania died on Saturday, November 1st, 2014 at his home while surrounded by his loving wife, children, and grandchildren.

He was born in Monessen, Pennsylvania on Friday, July 14, 1939 son of Jose Alvarez and Adela (Perez) Alvarez.

Herman was a lifelong resident of Monessen, and a member of The Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church, Monessen High School Class of 1957, the ASHE Engineering Group, AASHTO Asphalt Group, PAPA, the Contractors Association, Joe Walker Air Force Association, and the Monongahela Valley Country Club.

He was the founder of El Grande Industries.

Herman had previously worked for Victoria and Son’s Trucking and was the Manager of Burrell Construction Company, Donora Plant.

Herman served his country as a member of the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1960 as a Specialty Aircraft Mechanic for the Thunderbirds.

He was instrumental in constructing the War Memorial in Monessen City Park and in Donora. Herman was an advocate for all veterans in all military branches and expressed his gratitude for their sacrifices and accomplishments.

Herman was a great man, a devoted husband, son, brother, and friend, a loving father, and an adoring grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Adelene ‘Lena’ (Galante) Alvarez; daughter, Gloria (Gabe) Hudock, McMurray Pa.; son, Joseph (Melinda) Alvarez of Monongahela, Pa.; six grandchildren: Meghan Hudock, Natalie Alvarez, John Hudock, Julia Alvarez, Stephen Herman Hudock, Nina Alvarez; two brothers: Joseph ‘Speed’ Alvarez of Carroll Township, Pa., Tony (Joyce) Alvarez of Belle Vernon, Pa.; two sisters: Adela E. Alvarez of Monessen, Pa., Gloria Vasunda of Monongahela Pa.; a sister-in-law, Patty Galante Kozlowski of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and by numerous nieces and nephews, and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Harvey Mull; sister-in-law, Mary Alvarez; his in-laws, Angelo and Rosa Galante; and by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Joseph Galante, August (Joan) Galante, Tony (Louise) Galante, Grace (Mike) Urdenis.

Friends will be received today (Monday, November 3rd) from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Tuesday, November 4th, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the DALFONSO-BILLICK FUNERAL HOME INC. AND CREMATION SERVICES, 441 Reed Avenue, Monessen, PA 15062 (724.6848750).

Services will be held on Wednesday November 5th, 2014 beginning with a Blessing in the Funeral Home at 9:30 a.m. and followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. in The Epiphany of Our Lord Church, 618 Knox Avenue, Monessen.

Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Monessen.

This evening, there will be a combined Military Veterans Service held in the Funeral Home at 7:00
