Telephone scam circulating through Greene County area

By Luke Campbell for The 2 min read

In August, the first reported telephone scam involving individuals claiming to be deputy sheriffs to gain personal information struck Greene County.

And, according to Greene County Sheriff Brian Tennant, this is a problem that has continued to persist over the last few months, not just in Greene County but across Pennsylvania.

“It’s a really hard to track,” Tennant said. “We have probably had five people contact the sheriff’s office regarding this particular incident.”

The scam is being coordinated by people trying to gain access to personal information in an attempt to solicit money.

These individuals are using tactics such as telling residents that they owe back fines and taxes, and if they are not paid, they could face a legal punishment.

“It doesn’t seem as if they are targeting any specific age group,” Tennant said.

Tennant said debt cannot be collected over the telephone, and deputies do not have the permission to obtain any credit card information.

No arrests have been made, but the primary investigation has been turned over to the Pennsylvania Sheriffs Association.

According to the press release issued by Tennant, anyone who receives a telephone call from someone claiming to be a sheriff’s deputy can verify that person’s identity by calling the office at 724-627-7207.
