Local residents will participate in a national pro-life demonstration Sunday as they establish Life Chains in Everson-Scottdale, Uniontown and Carmichaels.

The Life Chains are groups of people who line up in a designated place with pro-life signs in a peaceful protest. Greater Fayette County Respect Life Committee is setting up a Life Chain at Five Corners in downtown Uniontown while Fay-West Respect Life Group is hosting one along the Everson-Scottdale Bridge. Both will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Another Life Chain is being created in Carmichaels from 1 to 2 p.m. in front of St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church along Route 88.

Life Chain is a national pro-life effort that started in Yuba City and Marysville, Calif., in 1987. The group maintains a website that reports more than 1,500 cities in the United States and Canada will participate this year.

According to the website, “We are a prayer chain ministry on the sidewalks of America, Canada and a few other nations. Each participant holds an approved pro-life sign and endeavors to be a compassionate and peaceful public witness for the sanctity of human life.”

Life Chains have been established in district communities for several years.

Patricia Borek, a member of Fay-West Respect for Life Group, said, “It brings together people who are pro-life, and we get a lot of positive feedback from the community that we are standing up for life.”

It also brings attention to local groups that advocate the movement.

Karla Hart of the Carmichaels Life Chain, said, “It gets people in the community to see there are people who support pro-life.”
