Albert J. DeVito

Albert J. DeVito, age 98, of Jefferson, Pa., died Tuesday, October 7, 2014 in the Donnell House, Washington, Pa., surrounded by family.
Albert was born on Saturday, March 4, 1916 in Brownsville, Pa., the youngest son of Pellegrino DeVito and Rosina (Gennerazzo) DeVito.
He attended The Historic Church of Saint Peter and school in Brownsville, Pa.
As a teenager in the early 1930’s, Albert volunteered his labor for about two years during the restoration of Saint Peter’s Church.
At Saint Peter’s, he was a member of The Holy Name Society and the church choir.
He worked as a Lineman for West Penn Power Company from 1935 to 1950.
From 1950 to 1960 he was an Electrician at the Crucible Mine.
In 1961 until 1986 he owned and operated a bakery in Jefferson.
Mr. DeVito served in the United States Army from April 1942 to December 1945 during World War II. His European tour took him from Normandy to France, Belgium and Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star for keeping communications open under heavy artillery fire during the Battle of the Bulge.
He was a member of Saint Marcellus Roman Catholic Church in Jefferson of the Saint Thomas Roman Catholic Parish, Clarksville, Pa., where he was a member of The Holy Name Society, the church choir and the Parish Council.
Mr. DeVito was also employed briefly in the construction of the Saint Marcellus Church.
He was also a Life Member of The Knights of Columbus and the American Legion Post No. 954, Jefferson.
Albert enjoyed gardening, woodworking, reading, walking and sports, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates.
He was dedicated to the Blessed Mother, prayed the Rosary daily, and passed away on the day marking the Feast of the Holy Rosary.
On Tuesday, February 17, 1942, he married Pauline Hill of Jefferson, who died Friday, June 10, 1983.
Surviving are a son, Frederick W. DeVito and his wife Tarry of Stafford, Virginia; four daughters: Ann DeVito of Jefferson, who resided with her father, Barbara S. Prah and her husband Anthony of Uniontown, Pa., Janice C. Sikora and her husband Richard of Uniontown, Pa., Nancy J. Brown and her husband Charles of Stafford, Virginia; seven grand children and five great grandchildren; one niece and several nephews.
Deceased in addition to his parents and wife are four sisters, Carma Malandro, Pauline Mangini, Albina Sessa and Donnetta Citrone; and four brothers, Michael Dewey and John DeVito, and two brothers in infancy.
Friends will be received Friday, October 10th, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the BEHM FUNERAL HOMES INC., 1477 Jefferson Road, Jefferson, Pa., where a Blessing Service will be held Saturday, October 11th, 2014 at 8:30 a.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 9:00 a.m. in Saint Marcellus Roman Catholic Church, Jefferson, with Reverend Father J. Francis Frazer as Celebrant.
Interment will follow Greene County Memorial Park, Waynesburg, Pa.
Graveside Military Rites and Honors will be accorded by American Legion Post No. 954 of Jefferson and the United States Army.
