John Samuel Finley

John Samuel Finley, age 90, of Low Hill, Centerville Borough, Pa., died on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 following a lengthy illness.

He was born Tuesday, January 1, 1924 in Smithton, Pa., the son of Clayton Finley and Bernice (Rhodes) Finley.

Mr. Finley had been employed by J & L Steel where he had worked as a Crew Leader at the General Machine Shop. He retired from there, at age 60, after having worked over 43 years for the company.

He was a World War II Veteran. At age 17, Mr. Finley enlisted in the United States Army. He was one of the first to hit the Normandy Beach. During his time in the service, Mr. Finley served in the Army Corps of Engineers and helped to construct a bridge over the Rhine River in Germany. Mr. Finley proudly served his country from Monday, February 22nd, 1943 to the time of his Honorable discharge in December 1945.

On Saturday, May 21st, 1949, John married Grace Blasiole. She died on Saturday, November 6th, 2004.

Mr. Finley had a ‘green thumb’ and enjoyed working in his vegetable garden and planting flowers.

He was a member of the Beallsville Lodge 237 Free & Accepted Masons and the Hanson-Cole American Legion Post 391, Fredericktown, Pa.

Deceased, in addition to his wife and parents, are his grandson, Richard Ray McDonald; brothers, Clayton Finley, Earl Finley; and sisters Annette Finley Riccuiti, Margie Finley Chenger.

Surviving are daughter Kathleen (Richard) McDonald of Centerville; son, Joseph (Tina) Finley also of Centerville, Pa.; two siblings: Ruth Finley Arnone, Gilbert Finley; grandchildren: John B. McDonald, Melissa Finley, Nicole (Jarred) Stepp, and the late Richard Ray McDonald; great-grandchildren: Raya McDonald, Isabella Stepp, and Scarlet Stepp.

Visitation will be today, October 16, 2014 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the FRANK BURKUS FUNERAL HOME, 26 Mill Street, Millsboro, PA 15348 where Services will be held on Friday, October 17, at 11 a.m.

Full Military Rites and Honors will be accorded by the American Legion Hanson-Cole Post 391 of Fredericktown, Pa.

Interment will follow in the Greene County Memorial Park, Waynesburg, Pa.

Beallsville Lodge 237 will conduct a Masonic Service in the Funeral Home tonight at 7:30 p.m
