Drive scheduled

The Builders Association of Fayette County will hold a food drive to benefit the Salvation Army Food Bank from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Uniontown Giant Eagle.

Employers awarded

Area employers California University of Pennsylvania and General Industries of Charleroi were named 2014 Employers of Excellence by the Washington County Chamber of Commerce and the Work Certified Academy.

A total of 12 employers were chosen as Employers of Excellence in three size categories.

General Industries received the award in the small employer category, and Cal U was a recipient in the large employer category.

The announcement was made Oct. 17 at the chamber’s Breakfast Briefing at the Hilton Garden Inn at Southpointe in Canonsburg.

Grant awarded

Southwestern Pennsylvania Legal Services Inc. in Washington County was one of four agencies in the state awarded a total of more than $1.5 million by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through its Fair Housing Initiatives Program to address housing discrimination.

The agency was awarded $450,000 to help enforce the Fair Housing Act by investigating alleged discriminatory practices and educating housing providers, local governments and potential victims of housing discrimination about their rights and responsibilities under the act.

Nationally, $38.3 million was awarded.

Farmland protected

The 177-acre William Iams crop and livestock farm in Amwell Township, Washington County, was one of 66 farms safeguarded by the state Department of Agriculture recently through the department’s farmland preservation program.

The state Agricultural Land Preservation Board preserved 6,293 acres of farmland from development during a recent meeting. The state has invested nearly $1.3 billion in protecting 500,079 acres on 4,704 farms across 57 counties since the program was established in 1988.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) market news grain auction report for western Pennsylvania for Oct. 20 is as follows:

Dealer and broker bids: Corn, number 2, $2.98-$3.18, average $3.03; wheat, number 2, $4.44-$5.11, average $4.61; soybeans, $8.72-$9.53, average $8.92.

Feed and grain mill bids: Corn, number 2, $3.05-$4.00, average $3.50; oats, number 2, $3.25-$5.35, average $3.98.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) market news hay auction report for central Pennsylvania for Oct. 20 is as follows:

Alfalfa, good, 162.5; mixed hay, premium, 210-300; timothy, premium, 240-275; grass, good, 155-340; straw, 100-210.
