Police accuse Brave woman of 117 counts of forgery
State police have accused a Brave woman of more than a 100 counts forgery after she cashed nearly $70,000 in checks from the Brave Water and Sewer Authority in Wayne Township.
Police allege that Carolyn E. Hillberry, who served as water and sewer authority secretary/treasurer, wrote 117 checks that had been altered from three different accounts owned by the authority.
Police said the total theft was determined to be about $69,790.
The complaint said earlier this year, the authority ordered an audit which was conducted by Joseph A. Prinzo, a certified public accountant hailing from McMurray.
Police allege that the authority’s investigation and audit revealed that when a check was written, Hillberry would alter the check so as to change the amount.
The authority reported the findings of their investigation to police in June.
According to court documents, Hillberry, 55, was charged with 117 counts of forgery. Hillberry was arraigned Friday by Magisterial District Judge Louis M. Dayich, who set bond at $10,000 unsecured.
Hillberry’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 9 before Dayich.
