State police said the infant had a broken right femur bone when they were called to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., on July 31, 2013. They were also told of older injuries, including four rib fractures on the left side and two rib fractures on the right side that were healing, as well as the left radius and ulna bone that was broken near the wrist and a tibia fracture on the right and left lower leg that were all also healing, according to court papers.

Sammons initially told police h did not know how the baby was injured. Later, he told police that he changed the infant’s diaper and when he reached for another diaper his knee came down on her hip and he heard the baby’s leg pop, according to a complaint filed in the case.

Police said Sammons could not explain the other injuries to the infant but recalled an incident where the baby had fallen out of a car seat onto a hardwood floor, and he said believes the fall might have cause the other injuries, police said.

When Sammons is released from prison, he must complete 250 hours of community service.
