An Allegheny County man serving a life sentence at the State Correctional Institution at Greene was found dead this morning.

Cleveland Rivers, 59, was found hanging in his cell around 6:15 a.m. by the staff as they conducted their morning security round, according to superintendent Robert Gilmore.

The staff responded until medical personnel arrived. Rivers was pronounced dead in his cell by a prison physician.

Rivers was serving a life sentence for a first degree murder committed on July 25, 1997 in Allegheny County. He had been an inmate at SCI-Greene since July 1999.

The Greene County Coroner’s Office will determine an official cause of death and the state police will conduct an investigation, prison officials said.
