Meetings set

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) will hold a series of stakeholder outreach meetings to assist the coal mining industry in preparing for the implementation of the next phase of a rule to lower miners’ exposure to respirable coal mine dust in underground and surface coal mines as part of the U.S. Department of Labor’s initiative to end black lung disease.

Of the nine meetings scheduled nationwide, two will take place locally:

n 1 p.m. Aug. 17 at Ramada Greensburg Hotel and Conference Center, located at 100 Ramada Inn Drive in Greensburg.

n 1 p.m. Aug. 18 at MSHA Coal District 3 Office, located at 604 Cheat Road in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Earnings released

United Bankshares Inc., the holding company of United Bank, which operates locations in Fairchance, Point Marion, Smithfield and Uniontown, reported that earnings for the second quarter of 2015 were $34.8 million, or 50 cents per diluted share, an increase from earnings for the second quarter of 2014 of $33.2 million, or 48 cents per diluted share.

United’s second quarter of 2015 produced an annualized return on average assets of 1.15 percent and an annualized return on average equity of 8.23 percent, compared to the return on assets of 1.13 percent and return on equity of 8.16 percent for the second quarter of 2014.

United’s board of directors declared a cash dividend of 32 cents per share for the quarter.

Competition announced

The U.S. Small Business Administration announced Wednesday the launch of the 2016 InnovateHER: Innovating for Women Business Challenge and Summit, a nationwide women’s business competition that highlights innovative products and services that help impact and empower the lives of women and their families.

Winners of local competitions to be held this fall by various organizations will advance to a semi-final round, from which 10 finalists will be chosen to attend the national challenge and summit in Washington, D.C. in March, where they will pitch their products and compete for $70,000 in prize money.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture market news grain auction report for western Pennsylvania for Aug. 3 is as follows:

Dealer and broker bids: Corn, number 2, $3.34-$4.06, average $3.51 wheat, number 2, $4.04; soybeans, $9.42-$9.65, average $9.59.

Feed and grain mill bids: Corn, number 2, $3.50-$4.25, average $3.93; oats, number 2, $2.90-$4.50, average $3.85.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture market news hay auction report for central Pennsylvania for Aug. 3 is as follows:

Alfalfa, premium, 265; mixed hay, premium, 200-305; timothy, good, 180; grass, good, 195-290; straw, 80-285.
