William Dale Sangston
William Dale Sangston, age 77, of New Geneva, Pa., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 27, 2015.
Born on Saturday, September 24, 1938, he was a beloved son of Wayne Sangston and Nellie (Hillen) Sangston.
William graduated from Masontown Senior High School in 1957 and enlisted in the United States Navy where he served until 1961 on the USS Blandy Destroyer.
Upon his Honorable Discharge from the Navy, he married his high school sweetheart, Dolores Bixler, on Sunday, December 3, 1961 in Belle Vernon, Pa.
William was a Plasterer by trade and worked with his father in the family business until enlisting in the United States Navy. Upon his discharge, he resumed his trade where he was very well known for his detail and craftsmanship. He was even given the opportunity to work on plastering the Coliseum at West Virginia University.
William was very active in the Boy Scouts and was Troop Leader for Troops 651, 661 and 681 from New Geneva and Smithfield, Pa.
He received the Silver Beaver and the Scout Key, and six of his Scouts under his direction earned their Eagle Scout Award.
William was a member of Jacobs Lutheran Church where he actively served in many capacities.
He loved his Lord, his country and his family most of all.
He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting with his daughter Tracey, his son William, his best friend and soul brother Jake Demaske, ‘adopted son’ Wes Gower, and family friend Tom Kunsak.
He enjoyed teaching young people to respect the outdoors and the use of firearms.
Besides hunting and fishing, one of his favorite things was to ‘go up on the mountain’ and hunt for Ginseng and berries. Over the years he picked hundreds of gallons of berries that were used by his wife to make pies and jellies.
William’s deer jerky was known the county around and he prided himself on his ‘secret recipe’.
Preceded in death by his mother and father; brothers, Kenneth and James; brothers-in-law, Keith Bixler and Kennard Tennent; and mother-in-law, Dorothy Bixler whom he dearly loved.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores, along with with their three children: Lissa Renee Brackin (Clarence), Tracey Ann Eberhart (Wes), William James Sangston (Kelly); six grandchildren: Heather Collins, Falynn Laurita, Brandon Eberhart, R a c h e l Eberhart, Alec Sangston and Tara Sangston; four great grandsons: Jacob, Joseph, James and Noah; brothers: Charles (Peg) of Ohio and John (Mary) of Oklahoma; sisters-in- laws: Carole Sangston, widow of James and Loretta Sangston, widow of Kenneth; sisters-in-law: Glenda Bixler, Dolores Bixler and Marlene Tennent; along with cousins: Bob and Carol Brooks and Jerry and Sue Bixler; many nieces and nephews.
Family and Friends will be received in the BERNARD M. TOWNSEND FUNERAL HOME, 220 South Main Street, Masontown, Pa., on Wednesday December 30, 2015 from 3 to 7 p.m. with a Service following. Reverend Rebecca F. Dittenhafer will officiate.
