Helen Carolyn (Nykiel) Sobek
Helen Carolyn (Nykiel) Sobek, age 84, of Fayette City, Pa., died Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 7:20 a.m. at Rehabilitation and Nursing Center at Greater Pittsburgh, Greensburg, Pa.
She was born Friday, June 6, 1930 in Allison, Pennsylvania a daughter of Joseph Nykiel and Nellie (Glazar) Nykiel.
A lifelong resident of Fayette City, Mrs. Sobek was currently a member of Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Perryopolis, Pa., and a previous member of the former Holy Spirit Church, Fayette City.
Helen graduated from Redstone High School, Republic, Class of 1945, with Perfect Attendance for all 12 years and played trumpet in the band.
She was employed at Rosenberg’s Furs, Edmund’s Jewelers, was a nanny, a census taker, and a homemaker.
Mrs. Sobek also served as President of the Happy Helen’s Club in Uniontown, Pa., was past Treasurer, Vice President and President of the Polish Heritage Club in Uniontown, and past President of the Frazier School District Central Parents Organization.
She enjoyed ceramics, baking and cooking.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Edward Nykiel, Casmir Nykiel, Walter Nykiel, Stanley Nykiel and John Nykiel; and a brother-in-law, Steve Mascella
She is survived by her husband, Julius A. Sobek with whom she recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on November 24, 2014; daughter, Janet M. Sobek of Greensburg, Pa.; three sons and two daughters-in-law: John L. and Helen Jo Sobek of Donora, Pa., Robert A. and Michele Sobek of Lakewood, Colorado, Henry J. Sobek of Belle Vernon, Pa.; brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Jackie Nykiel of Euclid, Ohio; sister, Mary Jane Mascella of East Lake, Ohio; two sisters-in-law: Ann Nykiel, Katie Nykiel; three grandchildren: John J. Sobek, Heather Graham and Robert A. Sobek Jr.; six great grandchildren: Matthew Graham, Savannah Graham, Decatur Graham V, Julian Sobek, Lilliana Sobek and Jeden Sobek; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends that she held close to her heart.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the PARZYNSKI FUNERAL HOME &Amp; CREMATIONS, Family Owned and Operated, 626 Broad Avenue, Belle Vernon, PA 15012 (724.929.6183) where a Prayer Service will be held Thursday, January 15, at 9:45 a.m.
A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. at Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church 3332 Pittsburgh Road, Perryopolis, Pa., with the Rev. Father Anthony W. Ditto as Celebrant.
Interment will follow in LaFayette Memorial Park, Brier Hill, Pa.
The family thanks Father Robert T. Lubic, Father John A. Sedlak, Father Chad R. Ficorilli, OSB, Father Anthony W. Ditto and Father Joseph L. Sredzinski for their many visits and prayers. Helen was comforted and greatly appreciated them.
The family also thanks the doctors, nurses and staff at Monongahela Valley Hospital, Excela Westmoreland Hospital, Saint Anne Home and Rehabilitation & Nursing Center for their care and compassion during her illnesses.
