A Carmichaels woman faces charges after police found a small child wandering alone on a busy highway in Greene County.

Cumberland Township police said the boy, age not provided, was wearing nothing more than an upside-down yellow shirt around 9:46 p.m. on a busy highway on June 18 by Junction Deli along Route 21.

The child told police that he was hungry, the complaint said.

Police said as soon as they took the boy into custody, they were able to get him clothes and food, the complaint said. The child was taken into custody by Child and Youth Services in Greene County and placed in a foster home, police said.

Police determined that the boy’s mother was Jessica Bender, 23, of 1002 W. George St., Carmichaels.

Bender was arrested Tuesday and charged with endangering the welfare of children and recklessly endangering another person, according to court documents.

She was arraigned Tuesday and remains free on bond.

Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 28 before Magisterial District Court Judge Glenn Bates.
