Man convicted of involuntary manslaughter in death of Connellsville teen

A Philadelphia man accused of killing a Connellsville teen was convicted of involuntary manslaughter Friday by a Fayette County jury.

Hasani Simpkins, 22, fatally shot Darrell Ross, 17, at a Uniontown home on Nov. 21, 2013.

Following the verdict, President Judge John F. Wagner Jr. sentenced Simpkins to 2 1/2 to 5 years in prison.

At the outset of the trial on Monday, prosecutors said they were seeking a first-degree murder conviction, claiming the shooting was intentional.

Simpkins, through his attorney, contended it was an accident.

Firearms experts who testified for both the prosecution and defense said that the gun used it the shooting could fire accidentally.
