Police searching for suspect who fired shots at ice cream man

2 min read

Police said an ice cream truck driver fought off his attacker as he was being robbed Sunday in Uniontown.

Uniontown police said Frank Swaney was selling ice cream around 8:30 p.m. Sunday in an alley by 22 Millview St. when he was approached by a woman who wasn’t interested in a snow cone or a fudgesickle, but demanded his money instead.

While Swaney was inside his F&S van, the woman pointed a gun at him through the van’s side window and said, “Give it up! Give up the (expletive) money!” police said.

Swaney threw the money on the floor in the back of his van, police said, so the woman said to him, “(Expletive) get it! Get it!”

Swaney told police the robber looked to the side for a split second, so he struck her hand hard enough for her to fall backward.

Police said that’s when the woman started firing her handgun at the van.

Swaney said as soon as he heard shots being fired, he dove onto the van’s floor, police said.

Police said there were four bullet holes in the passenger side of van and a bullet was recovered from the vehicle’s floor.

Swaney was hit by shrapnel in the chest, but was treated at the scene by Fayette EMS.

Police continue to investigate the incident. Police described the suspect as a black woman, in her teens or early 20s, who wearing a black hoodie and black shorts.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Uniontown police at 724-430-2929.
