Scott wins South Union Township supervisor’s race
Appointed South Union Township Supervisor Jason Scott defeated challenger Louis “Weeger” Agostini for a four-year term in Tuesday’s election.
Scott won in a 1,753-1,639 vote, according to unofficial results.
Agostini had narrowly defeated Scott in a three-candidate race for the Democratic Party nomination in the primary election, but Scott received enough Republican write-in votes to secure the Republican Party nomination.
Scott, the nephew of Supervisor Rick Vernon, was appointed in December 2013 to serve the remainder of term of the late Thomas Frankhouser, who died a month earlier.
Prior to his appointment, Scott worked for Seiler Excavating, a Hopwood business owned by members of his family. The company did a lot of work for the township, mostly sewage line installations for the township sewage authority, through the bidding process over the years, Scott said.
Agostini owns an excavation and general contracting business. He is a member of the township zoning hearing board, Fayette County Planning Commission, Chestnut Ridge Counseling board and the North Union Township Municipal Services Authority. Previously, he served as president of the Uniontown Area YMCA board and chaired the YMCA’s building and grounds committee.
Incumbent Democratic Supervisor Robert Schiffbauer ran unopposed for a six-year term. He received 1,169 votes, according to unofficial results.
Votes from two of the three precincts in the township had been counted by press time. The results showed that votes from 1,811, or 25 percent, of the 7,191 registered voters in the township had been counted.
