Man charged with assault for shaking 3-month-old son
A Franklin Township man has been charged with aggravated assault, accused of shaking and hitting his 3-month-old son last week.
Trent Alexander Buchanan, 23, of 124 4th St., reportedly told state police in Greene County that he shook his son and hit the boy on the back of the head when the child choked as he was having a bottle.
However, a doctor in the pediatric intensive care unit at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia said that the injuries were “non accidental” and indicated they were consistent with Shaken Baby Syndrome, police said in court papers.
Police said the baby has a fractured skull, three areas of bleeding on his brain and retinal hemorrhages.
According to an affidavit filed in the case, Buchanan and the child’s mother, Cori Lea Scott, 25, were watching a movie on Nov. 10.
When Scott left to the return the movie, visit a friend and stop at an ATM, police said she told them that she left the baby home with Buchanan.
When she called Buchanan, Scott told police that he told her to come home immediately, according to the affidavit.
Scott said she found her son on the couch, not breathing, and called 911.
A dispatcher walked her through CPR until an ambulance arrived, police said.
The affidavit noted that Buchanan did not call 911 until Scott arrived home.
She told police that when she left, there was nothing wrong with the baby, the affidavit indicated.
In addition to aggravated assault, Buchanan also faces counts of simple assault, endangering the welfare of children and reckless endangerment.
Magisterial District Judge Glenn Bates set a Nov. 24 preliminary hearing date. Buchanan is in Greene County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bond.
