Charleroi board OKs option to sell properties

Charleroi Area School Board voted unanimously Tuesday to accept the option of Wendell H. Stone Co., Inc. for the vacant Atlas Wholesale building along Second Street and McKean Avenue, as well as the former high school stadium near the boat launch.

Stone now has 45 days to come up with $100,000 or the board will turn to another suitor, Mon Valley Alliance, which offered to find funding to raze the Atlas building.

District Superintendent Edward Zelich said the alliance would have to match that $100,000 figure or come up with a plan.

Either way, the superintendent said, “We’re trying to produce jobs.”

The borough has condemned the Atlas Wholesale building. Alliance Vice Chairman John LaCarte said he’s proposed seeking funds to raze that building and to develop the nearby stadium site.

“There is a lot of funding out there for riverfront property,” LaCarte told reporters after a brief appeal to the school board.

The discussion and subsequent board vote were highlights of a meeting that began with honors for some three dozen kindergarten students and a long list of personnel items.

Teachers Marissa Dzurinko, Stephanie Kirkpatrick, Brianne Rosendale and Barb Todaro and para-professional Melynda Girdwood were approved for the Elementary Center 21st Century Afterschool Program, all retroactive to April 4.

The board hired Stan Milchovich to conduct driver’s education theory and behind-the-wheel courses, and approved a summer driver’s education program at a fee of $120 per student.

It hired Tracy Day as girls assistant varsity soccer coach, Kayla Clair as junior varsity cheer coach and Peyton Merlo as middle school cheer coach for 2016-17, all contingent upon receipt of required clearances.

It hired Jon DiFilippo as a substitute middle and high school communications teacher and Shanae Urwin as a cafeteria substitute support personnel.

The board accepted with regret Paula DiNardo’s retirement as a cook’s helper. It ratified the resignation of assistant baker and cashier Donna Naccarato that took effect Dec. 22.

In other business, the board approved the purchase of high school biology textbooks for $14,229.50; middle school math textbooks for $38,934.17; and business and personal finance textbooks for a new 11th-grade course for $2,705.67.
