By The 1 min read

An Avella man who allegedly charged at troopers with a weapon is in critical condition after he was shot, according to state police.

State police said they responded to 357 Bethel Ridge Rd. in Jefferson Township, Washington County for a domestic disturbance just before 12:30 a.m. Steven Garrett Ward, 20, who lives at the residence was allegedly “out of control,” damaging property and “being physical” with family members, his mother told police.

Ward allegedly confronted troopers and charged at them with a weapon. Police said he failed to comply with commands to drop his weapon, and officers fired shots. He was flown to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition, police said.

The investigation is ongoing, and the Washington County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case. The officers who fired shots are currently serving in administrative duties, police said.
