Georges Twp. house partially collapses while mother and son inside

A mother and son were inside their home when it partially collapsed on Sunday morning in Georges Township, according to Fayette County 911.

Collier Volunteer Fire Department along with South Western Ambulance Services were dispatched to the house on Walnut Hill Road at 11:22 a.m., after the front of the home had partially collapsed following heavy rainfall.

The homeowner, a woman in her 70s on oxygen, and her son, who is handicapped, were able to make it out of the house safely, but have since been displaced.

Jason Smith of Uniontown said his mother has owned the house since 1983, and the cause of the collapse was a result of deteriorating conditions due to lack of finances to repair the home. Smith said nearly 20 years ago a car hit the house, and it also sustained damage from a pine tree rotting out the front.

“It’s just an all-round bad situation a week before Christmas, but at least they both got out the house OK,” said Smith.

The house was condemned shortly after the incident on Sunday, and K2 engineering determined it is likely the house will be demolished, according to Smith.

A GoFundMe page will be made available Monday to try and raise funds to help the family.
