Inmate found dead in cell at SCI Greene

An inmate serving a life sentence for first-degree murder in Delaware County was found dead in his cell Monday morning.

Shawn Johnson, 35, was found hanging in his cell at at SCI Greene about 7:15 a.m. when employees were serving breakfast, according to a statement issued by Superintendent Robert Gilmore.

Staff and medical personnel immediately responded, and Johnson was pronounced dead by the coroner’s office.

The official cause of death will be released by the Greene County Coroner’s office, and state police will conduct an investigation according to state policy, Gilmore said.

He said Gilmore was committed in 2008 and had been at SCI Greene since June.
