Two people were taken to Monongahela Valley Hospital following an accident that closed Interstate 70 eastbound for several hours Wednesday morning.

Police have not yet released the identities of those involved in the accident, though a member of the Bentleyville Volunteer Fire Department said one person was entrapped in a vehicle and had to be cut free, while the other appeared to have back and neck injuries. Neither of the individuals transported to the hospital appeared to have life-threatening injuries, according to officials.

State police said the accident involved two tractor-trailer trucks and four passenger vehicles. The accident was called in around 7:05 a.m. and kept the eastbound lanes of I-70 closed until 9:30 a.m., Jardine said.

“There are still slick spots out there. We’re still advising motorists to slow down and be alert,” said Tpr. Matthew Jardine, the public information officer for the Washing-ton station.

Valerie Petersen, spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, said the accident affected eastbound traffic Wednesday morning between Bentleyville and Eighty Four.

“Motorists need to have their cars better prepared for winter with good tires, and the same for trucks. People need to slow down and use caution,” Petersen said.

The Fallowfield Volunteer Fire Department, troopers from the Belle Vernon station, Bearcat EMS, and J&M, Insana’s and Weld’s towing companies also responded to the scene.
