Doald O. “Don” Butermore Jr.

Donald O. Buttermore Jr., age 86, passed away on Thursday, January 21, 2016 in his home in Uniontown, Pennsylvania

He was born on Saturday, March 2, 1929 in Star Junction, Pa., son of Donald O. Buttermore Sr. and Ina (Loonis) Buttermore.

‘Don’ was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Wanda C. (Donati) Buttermore; and a sister, Patricia Ann Herbert.

Don attended Perry Township School System and graduated with the class of 1947. After serving in the Army during the Korean War, he received his Bachelor of Science degree at California State Teachers College and attended the University of Pittsburgh. Later he received his Master’s degree at George Washington University in Washington, DC. He was a science and math teacher in Brownsville, PA and also taught science and math at Arlington County schools in Arlington, VA. He taught at the University of Virginia, Arlington Branch. Don had articles published in the NEA Journal and National Council of Math Teachers, and received the Award of Honor from the Virginia Academy of Science for outstanding teachers. He served on the planning committee for various student projects, especially with the NASA Viking mission and SkyLab. Don was invited with students to attend a launch at Cape Kennedy. He was a lifelong Scout, active in Star Junction/Perryopolis Boy Scouts as a scoutmaster, as well as in Arlington, VA. He was a staff member at Camp Conestoga and a member and Elder at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Uniontown, PA.

Don is survived by four nephews; Tom Herbert of Charlotte, NC; Gary Herbert of Hampton, VA; Howard Herbert of LaValle, MD and David Herbert of Cumberland, MD as well as numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the ANDREW D. FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORIES, INC., 80 Morgantown Street, Uniontown, PA where family and friends will be received on Monday, January 25, 2016 from 2 -4 PM and 6-8 PM, and from 9-10 AM on Tuesday, January 26 followed by a service celebrating Don’s life at 10 AM with Reverend Tom Holslag officiating. Interment will be in Lafayette Memorial Park, Brier Hill, PA.
