Three women who are hoping to make area teens feel like Cinderella and Prince Charming have undertaken the Glass Slipper Project.

Valley residents Angela Coppi-McDonough, Dee Gunia and Ashley Milton are hoping to make prom shopping more affordable for teens and their parents who might otherwise struggle financially to afford dresses, suits and ties, shoes and accessories for the big night.

“I never went to my prom, but I did buy a dress and it was very expensive, so I know how it feels,” said Milton.

With prices around $15 per dress and choices of accessories, the women are hoping to alleviate the financial stress caused by prom.

The Glass Slipper Project was sparked when Gunia saw a group in Allegheny County doing something similar. She called upon Coppi-McDonough, whom she knew had the space to undertake such a project at her Donora store, Junk and Disorderly, and the women set out on a mission to help make the prom more affordable.

“Our hope is to bring the community together and make prom season a little more affordable. This is our first time doing this, but the hope is to continue it for years to come,” Milton said.

While they are based in Donora, the Glass Slipper Project isn’t just for students in the Ringgold School District.

“We are open to helping everyone from all over,” Milton said.

Since March 6, they have received 70 dresses and are still looking for more donations. They are hoping to reach somewhere between 100 to 150 gowns to offer a good selection to the local students.

They are accepting gently worn prom dresses, bridesmaid dresses, suits, ties, dress shirts and accessories. They are also in need of hangers and clothing racks to display the dresses and suits.

Donations can be dropped off at Junk and Disorderly, 518 McKean Ave., Donora, Wednesday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

In addition to donations, the three are also looking for volunteers to help on the days they plan to open the store and distribute the dresses.

The store will be open from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 10 and 17 and also from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 30.
